Uyolo: A Journey of Resilience, Transformation, and New Beginnings.

Alessandra Gargiulo

Dear friends and fellow entrepreneurs,

Today, I am thrilled to share an exciting chapter in the story of Uyolo. As we embark on this new phase, I want to take a moment to reflect on our journey, the challenges we've faced, and the lessons we've learned along the way. This is not just a story of a startup; it's a story of resilience, transformation, and unwavering commitment to a better, more sustainable future.

The Birth of Uyolo: A Dream Rooted in South Africa

The idea of creating Uyolo first started in 2018, after spending six transformative months in South Africa. Witnessing the enduring impacts of apartheid 20 years after its dismantlement deeply moved me and fueled my desire to create a platform that could drive positive change. After long and heated conversations with Yetoe and Audrey - those conversations you have when you perhaps naively believe you are not too young to change the world - we decided to join forces and create Uyolo. Our vision was simple yet profound: to catalyze new technologies for sustainable impact and foster a world where both people and the planet thrive. Uyolo, derived from the Xhosa word for happiness, became the embodiment of this vision.

The Early Days: Recognition and Challenges

Our journey began with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to our mission. We were honored to win the startup competition OPENF@B by BNP Paribas and received the Seal of Excellence from the EU's Horizon 2020 program. These early successes validated our vision and gave us the momentum we needed. However, like many startups, we faced significant challenges, particularly when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. The world was changing rapidly, and we had to adapt.

Navigating Through the Pandemic: Resilience in the Face of Adversity

The pandemic tested our resilience. Launching the Uyolo App amidst such uncertainty was daunting, but it also underscored the importance of our mission. We realized that sustainability wasn't just a feel-good initiative; it was a necessity. The crisis highlighted the interconnectedness of our world and the urgent need for sustainable solutions. During this period, we applied to Invitalia's Smart & Start program, which helped fund (albeit with the ups and down of this program, if you know you know) a business acceleration journey with Entrepreniston. Their support was instrumental in helping us redesign the Uyolo App with a renewed focus on sustainability and B2B services. Despite the challenges, we emerged stronger, more determined, and more aligned with our core values.

The Evolution of Uyolo: From Philanthropy to Strategic Sustainability

As we relaunch Uyolo in 2024, we are embracing a significant shift. While philanthropy remains a catalyst for change, Uyolo 2.0 reflects a more strategic, value-driven approach to sustainability. We recognize that sustainability must be integrated into the core of business strategies, aligning with stakeholders' needs and creating tangible impact.

Our new logo symbolizes this transformation – a journey from a linear to a circular approach, much like a spring that accelerates continuous improvement and growth. Sustainability is not only about respecting the people and the planet; it is about securing a competitive advantage for the future.

Lessons Learned: The Entrepreneurial Journey

As a co-founder and sustainability professional, I've learned invaluable lessons on this journey. The path of a self-funded entrepreneur is filled with challenges, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Resilience is Crucial: The ability to adapt and persevere through tough times is vital. The pandemic taught us that flexibility and resilience are key to survival and success.
  • The Need for a Clear Vision and Purpose: A clear vision and purpose guide us through uncertainty and keep us focused on our goals. It’s important to continually revisit and reaffirm our mission to ensure alignment and inspire our team and community.
  • The Power of a Dedicated Team: Our team’s unwavering commitment has been the backbone of our success. Building a team that shares a common vision and values is crucial. Their passion and dedication drive the company forward, especially during challenging times.
  • The Importance of Community: Our journey would not have been possible without the support of our community. From the nonprofits who patiently believed in us from the very beginning, to the business partners who understood the challenges of managing government-issued funding without compromising on quality (shoutout to the Iuno team!), to the business advisors who have quite literally revolutionized the way we think and operate (Francesca, Loris, and the whole Entrepreniston team, thank you!). Our community has been key to our growth.
  • Financial Sustainability: To make a lasting impact, it’s essential to create a financially sustainable business model. While our initial focus was on philanthropy, we realized that long-term change requires financial viability. This ensures that we can continue to innovate, scale our efforts, and make a substantial difference in the world.
  • Embracing Challenges as Opportunities: Every challenge we faced presented an opportunity to learn and grow. Embracing these challenges with a positive mindset has enabled us to innovate and adapt, turning obstacles into stepping stones.
